RESUMO

Graphene oxide (GOx) is a nanomaterial with demonstrated capacity to remove metals from water. However, its effects on organic pollutants and metal(loid)s present in polluted soils when used for remediation purposes have not been extensively addressed. Likewise, few studies describe the effects of GOx on edaphic properties and soil biology. In this context, here we assessed the potential of GOx for remediating polluted soil focusing also on different unexplored effects of GOx in soil. To achieve this, we treated soil contaminated with concurrent inorganic (As and metals) and organic pollution (TPH and PAHs), using GOx alone and in combination with nutrients (N and P sources). In both cases increased availability of As and Zn was observed after 90 days, whereas Cu and Hg availability was reduced and the availability of Pb and the concentration of organic pollutants were not significantly affected. The application of GOx on the soil induced a significant and rapid change (within 1 week) in microbial populations, leading to a transient reduction in biodiversity, consistent with the alteration of several soil properties. Concurrently, the combination with nutrients exhibited a distinct behaviour, manifesting a more pronounced and persistent shift in microbial populations without a decrease in biodiversity. On the basis of these findings, GOx emerges as a versatile amendment for soil remediation approaches.

Introduction: The multiple forced expiratory maneuvers that must be performed during methacholine test require a high degree of collaboration and can lead to fatigue. However, impulse oscillometry (IOS) is a noninvasive test, quick and easy to perform, that does not require effort-dependent maneuvers.Objectives: The primary endpoint was to evaluate the relationship between IOS and spirometry during the methacholine test. The secondary endpoint was to study the predictive value of baseline IOS in the development of bronchial hyperreactivity.Methods: Observational, prospective, cross-sectional study, with recruitment of consecutive patients from the pulmonology department with clinical suspicion of bronchial asthma with negative bronchodilator test and normal FeNO.Results: Twenty-five patients were included, with a mean age of 49 ± 18 years. Thirteen patients (52%) had a positive methacholine test. The correlation between IOS indices and FEV1 was significant (p < 0.05) in all cases. The indices with the highest predictive power were R5-20 and AX. The optimal cutoff points were an increase of greater than 32.96% in R5, greater than 120.83% for X5, an increase of 30.30 [kPa l-1s-1] in R5-20, and an increase of 1.01 [kPa l-1] for AX. Baseline oscillometry demonstrated a strong predictive value in the development of bronchial hyperreactivity, with a sensitivity of 61.5% and a specificity of 91.7%, using the cut-off point of 160.0% for R5.Conclusions: IOS may be a valuable alternative to forced spirometry in detecting bronchial hyperreactivity during the methacholine test, showing a good correlation between both tests.

Although different amendments have been used for the immobilization of metals and metalloids in contaminated soils, in most of them there are still important challenges that need to be faced in order to achieve an optimal result. In this work, a new material based on a carbon foam impregnated with goethite nanoneedles has been developed with the aim of evaluating its effect on the mobility and availability of As, Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn in an industrial soil. For this purpose, leaching, sequential extraction and phytotoxicity studies have been carried out. The results were compared with the same carbon foam without goethite impregnation. When the soil was treated with goethite-based carbon foam nanocomposite, the mobility of metal(loid)s was markedly reduced, with the exception of Zn, which showed moderate immobilization. The presence of acid groups on the surface of the carbon foam, together with a high surface area, led to a strong immobilization of pollutants. Moreover, the modification of the foams using goethite nanoneedles, imply that the novel nanocomposite obtained is effective to remediate simultaneously metal and metalloid-polluted soils, without any relevant effect on soil toxicity.

This study investigated the effects of an amylase-enabled corn silage on lactational performance, enteric CH4 emission, and rumen fermentation of lactating dairy cows. Following a 2-wk covariate period, 48 Holstein cows were blocked based on parity, days in milk, milk yield (MY), and CH4 emission. Cows were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 treatments in an 8-wk randomized complete block design experiment: (1) control corn silage (CON) from an isogenic corn without α-amylase trait and (2) Enogen hybrid corn (Syngenta Seeds LLC) harvested as silage (ECS) containing a bacterial transgene expressing α-amylase (i.e., amylase-enabled) in the endosperm of the grain. The ECS and CON silages were included at 40% of the dietary dry matter (DM) and contained, on average, 43.3 and 41.8% DM and (% DM) 36.7 and 37.5% neutral detergent fiber, and 36.1 and 33.1% starch, respectively. Rumen samples were collected from a subset of 10 cows using the ororuminal sampling technique on wk 3 of the experimental period. Enteric CH4 emission was measured using the GreenFeed system (C-Lock Inc.). Dry matter intake (DMI) was similar between treatments. Compared with CON, MY (38.8 vs. 40.8 kg/d), feed efficiency (1.47 vs. 1.55 kg of MY/kg of DMI), and milk true protein (1.20 vs. 1.25 kg/d) and lactose yields (1.89 vs. 2.00 kg/d) were increased, whereas milk urea nitrogen (14.0 vs. 12.7 mg/dL) was decreased, with the ECS diet. No effect of treatment on energy-corrected MY (ECM) was observed, but a trend was detected for increased ECM feed efficiency (1.45 vs. 1.50 kg of ECM/kg of DMI) for cows fed ECS compared with CON-fed cows. Daily CH4 emission was not affected by treatment, but emission intensity was decreased with the ECS diet (11.1 vs. 10.3 g/kg of milk, CON and ECS, respectively); CH4 emission intensity on ECM basis was not different between treatments. Rumen fermentation, apart from a reduced molar proportion of butyrate in ECS-fed cows, was not affected by treatment. Apparent total-tract digestibility of nutrients and urinary and fecal nitrogen excretions, apart from a trend for increased DM digestibility by ECS-fed cows, were not affected by treatment. Overall, ECS inclusion at 40% of dietary DM increased milk, milk protein, and lactose yields and feed efficiency, and tended to increase ECM feed efficiency but had no effect on ECM yield in dairy cows. The increased MY with ECS led to a decrease in enteric CH4 emission intensity, compared with the control silage.

The objective of this experiment was to determine the effect of increasing digestible His (dHis) levels with a rumen-protected (RP) His product on milk production, milk composition, and plasma AA concentrations in lactating dairy cows fed a metabolizable protein (MP)-deficient diet, according to the National Research Council dairy model from 2001. The companion paper presents results on the effect of increasing dHis dose with a MP-adequate basal diet. Twenty Holstein cows, of which 8 were rumen-cannulated, were used in a replicated 4 × 4 Latin square design experiment with four 28-d periods. Treatments were a control diet supplying 1.8% dHis of MP or 37 g/d (dHis1.8) and the control diet supplemented RP-His to provide 2.2, 2.6, or 3.0%, dHis of MP, or 53, 63, and 74 g/d (dHis2.2, dHis2.6, and dHis3.0, respectively). Histidine dose did not affect dry matter intake, but milk yield increased quadratically and energy-corrected milk yield increased linearly with increasing dHis dose. Histidine dose had a quadratic effect on milk fat concentration but did not affect milk fat yield. Lactose concentration decreased linearly, whereas lactose yield increased linearly with increasing dHis dose. There was a tendency for a linear increase in milk true protein concentration, and milk true protein yield increased linearly with dHis dose. Further, plasma His concentration increased linearly with increasing dHis dose and calculated apparent efficiency of His utilization decreased quadratically with increasing dHis supply. Histidine had minor or no effects on rumen fermentation. In the conditions of this experiment, RP-His supplementation of an MP-deficient corn silage-based diet increased milk yield linearly up to a dHis supply of 63 g/d (or 2.6% dHis of MP) and increased feed efficiency, energy-corrected milk yield and milk true protein yield linearly up to a dHis supply of 74 g/d (or 3.0% dHis of MP) in lactating dairy cows.

Resumen Objetivo: establecer y evaluar la relevancia clínica de las interacciones medicamentosas en el tratamiento de pacientes con hepatitis C. Método: se realizó una búsqueda en PubMed/MedLine de artículos publicados en inglés y en español, desde el 1 de enero de 2015 hasta el 30 de marzo de 2017, utilizando los términos Mesh: Hepatitis C AND drug interactions OR herb-drug interactions OR food-drug interactions, de estudios realizados en humanos. La relevancia clínica de las interacciones medicamentosas se estableció y evaluó con base en la probabilidad de ocurrencia y la gravedad de la interacción. Resultados: se identificaron 184 artículos, de los cuales 92 se seleccionaron por el título y resumen para revisión completa, a 2 de ellos no fue posible acceder al texto completo. De estos, 57 aportaban interacciones, lo que permitió identificar 155 parejas de interacciones medicamentosas, de las cuales 154 (99,4 %) fueron farmacocinéticas y 1 (0,6 %) farmacodinámica. Por su parte, de las 155 parejas, 34 (21,9 %) se valoraron de nivel 1; 73 (47,1 %) de nivel 2; 48 (31,0 %) de nivel 3; y 0 (0,0 %) de nivel 4. Además, se identificaron 29 parejas agrupadas como interacciones con evidencia de ausencia de relevancia clínica. Conclusiones: más de 99 % de las interacciones medicamentosas de relevancia clínica son farmacocinéticas, asociadas con cambios en el metabolismo y el transporte de fármacos; el simeprevir y la terapia 3D (Paritaprevir/Ritonavir+ Ombitasvir+Dasabuvir) fueron los medicamentos con mayor número de interacciones.


Abstract Objective: This study-s objective is to establish and evaluate the clinical relevance of drug interactions during treatment of patients with hepatitis C. Method: A PubMed/MedLine search was conducted for articles published in English and Spanish from January 1, 2015 to March 30, 2017 using the terms Mesh: Hepatitis C AND drug interactions OR herb-drug interactions OR food-drug interactions, from studies conducted in humans. The clinical relevance of drug interactions was established and evaluated based on probability of occurrence and severity of interactions. Results: Of the 184 four articles identified, 92 were selected by title and abstract for full review. The full texts of two articles could not be accessed. Of the remaining articles, 57 describ ed relevant interactions. Of the 155 pairs of drugs that interact that were identified, 154 (99.4%) were pharmacokinetic, and one (0.6%) was pharmacodynamic. Thirty-four of the 155 pairs (21.9%) were assessed at level 1; 73 (47.1%) were assessed at level 2; 48 (31.0%) were assessed at level 3, none were assessed at level 4. In addition, 29 pairs of interacting drugs had no evidence of clinical relevance. Conclusions: More than 99% of clinically relevant drug interactions are pharmacokinetics and are associated with changes in metabolism and transport of drugs. Simeprevir and 3D (Paritaprevir/Ritonavir+ Ombitasvir+Dasabuvir) therapy had the greatest number of interactions.

TP73 is a member of the TP53 family whose expression has been observed altered in most human cancers and associated with the prognosis. TP73 translates into a complex number of isoforms with both oncogenic and tumour-suppressor functions and presents a complex cross-talk with other members of the family (TP53 and TP63). In this revision, we focus on the evidence that may support TP73 variants as prognostic markers in cancer. Nowadays, most publications in this topic highlight the association between overexpression of the oncogenic variants and failure to respond to chemotherapy and/or shorter survival. In addition, we comment on the putative possibilities that the detection through a liquid biopsy of TP73 variants may provide, and finally, the significance of determining the value of the combined alteration of the TP53 family members in the clinical setting

BACKGROUND: The recommended screening of rabies in 'suspect' animal cases involves testing fresh brain tissue. The preservation of fresh tissue however can be difficult under field conditions and formalin fixation provides a simple alternative that may allow a confirmatory diagnosis. The occurrence and location of histopathological changes and immunohistochemical (IHC) labelling for rabies in formalin fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) canine brain is described in samples from 57 rabies suspect cases from Sri-Lanka. The presence of Negri bodies and immunohistochemical detection of rabies virus antigen were evaluated in the cortex, hippocampus, cerebellum and brainstem. The effect of autolysis and artefactual degeneration of the tissue was also assessed. RESULTS: Rabies was confirmed in 53 of 57 (93%) cases by IHC. IHC labelling was statistically more abundant in the brainstem. Negri bodies were observed in 32 of 53 (60.4%) of the positive cases. Although tissue degradation had no effect on IHC diagnosis, it was associated with an inability to detect Negri bodies. In 13 cases, a confirmatory Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing for rabies virus RNA was undertaken by extracting RNA from fresh frozen tissue, and also attempted using FFPE samples. PCR detection using fresh frozen samples was in agreement with the IHC results. The PCR method from FFPE tissues was suitable for control material but unsuccessful in our field cases. CONCLUSIONS: Histopathological examination of the brain is essential to define the differential diagnoses of behaviour modifying conditions in rabies virus negative cases, but it is unreliable as the sole method for rabies diagnosis, particularly where artefactual change has occurred. Formalin fixation and paraffin embedding does not prevent detection of rabies virus via IHC labelling even where artefactual degeneration has occurred. This could represent a pragmatic secondary assay for rabies diagnosis in the field because formalin fixation can prevent sample degeneration. The brain stem was shown to be the site with most viral immunoreactivity; supporting recommended sampling protocols in favour of improved necropsy safety in the field. PCR testing of formalin fixed tissue may be successful in certain circumstances as an alternative test.

A case-control study was conducted in 2013 to investigate the use of pituitary-derived hormones from sheep as a potential risk factor for the presence of atypical scrapie in Great Britain sheep holdings. One hundred and sixty-five holdings were identified as cases. Two equal sets of controls were selected: no case of scrapie and cases of classical scrapie. A total of 495 holdings were selected for the questionnaire survey, 201 responses were received and 190 (38.3 per cent) were suitable for analysis. The variables 'use-of-heat-synchronisation/superovulation' and 'flock size' were significantly associated with the occurrence of atypical scrapie. Farms with atypical cases were less likely (OR 0.25, 95 per cent CI 0.07 to 0.89) to implement heat synchronisation/superovulation in the flock than the control group. Atypical cases were 3.3 times (95 per cent CI 1.38 to 8.13) more likely to occur in large holdings (>879 sheep) than in small flocks (<164 sheep). If the 'use-of-heat-synchronisation/superovulation' is a proxy for the use of pituitary-derived hormones, the significant negative association between having a case of atypical scrapie and the use of these practices rules out the initial hypothesis that using these drugs is a risk factor for the occurrence of atypical scrapie. Flock size was a significant risk factor for atypical scrapie, consistent with a previous generic case-control study.

The results of the study reported here are part of an ongoing integrated research programme aimed at producing additional, robust, evidence on the genetic resistance to classical scrapie in goats, with particular reference to codon 146. The study targeted animals aged ⩾6 years, which were born and raised in infected herds and were being culled for management reasons. A total of 556 animals were tested, and all positive animals (n = 117) were of the susceptible NN genotype. A total of 246 goats heterozygous or homozygous for putatively resistant alleles (S146 and D146) were screened with no positive results. The outcome of this study supports the hypothesis that the D146 and S146 alleles could be used as the basis for a nationwide strategy for breeding for resistance in the Cypriot goat population.

We present an assimilation system for atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) using a Global Eulerian-Lagrangian Coupled Atmospheric model (GELCA), and demonstrate its capability to capture the observed atmospheric CO2 mixing ratios and to estimate CO2 fluxes. With the efficient data handling scheme in GELCA, our system assimilates non-smoothed CO2 data from observational data products such as the Observation Package (ObsPack) data products as constraints on surface fluxes. We conducted sensitivity tests to examine the impact of the site selections and the prior uncertainty settings of observation on the inversion results. For these sensitivity tests, we made five different site/data selections from the ObsPack product. In all cases, the time series of the global net CO2 flux to the atmosphere stayed close to values calculated from the growth rate of the observed global mean atmospheric CO2 mixing ratio. At regional scales, estimated seasonal CO2 fluxes were altered, depending on the CO2 data selected for assimilation. Uncertainty reductions (URs) were determined at the regional scale and compared among cases. As measures of the model-data mismatch, we used the model-data bias, root-mean-square error, and the linear correlation. For most observation sites, the model-data mismatch was reasonably small. Regarding regional flux estimates, tropical Asia was one of the regions that showed a significant impact from the observation network settings. We found that the surface fluxes in tropical Asia were the most sensitive to the use of aircraft measurements over the Pacific, and the seasonal cycle agreed better with the results of bottom-up studies when the aircraft measurements were assimilated. These results confirm the importance of these aircraft observations, especially for constraining surface fluxes in the tropics.

Multiple cases of atypical scrapie in the same holding and co-existence with classical scrapie have been reported in Great Britain. A two-stage simulation tool was developed by combining a sampling algorithm and a hierarchical Bayesian model to simulate the number of positive cases of atypical scrapie from: (i) random sampling and (ii) using the actual sampled population in Great Britain, being the output probability of detection of flocks with one and more cases. Cluster analysis was conducted to assess the level of geographical over- and under-sampling over the years. The probability of detecting at least two cases of atypical scrapie in the same holding is much lower in simulated random data than in simulated actual data for all scenarios. Sampling bias in the selection of sheep for testing led to multiple sampling from fewer but larger holdings, Scotland, and areas of Wales were under-sampled and the South-West and East of England oversampled. The pattern of atypical scrapie cases observed is unlikely to be explained by a multi-case event epidemiologically linked. The co-existence of classical and atypical scrapie is a rare event with 19 holdings detected in GB and does not suggest an epidemiological link between the two types of disease.

Scrapie in goats is a transmissible, fatal prion disease, which is endemic in the British goat population. The recent success in defining caprine PRNP gene variants that provide resistance to experimental and natural classical scrapie has prompted the authors to conduct a survey of PRNP genotypes in 10 goat breeds and 52 herds to find goats with the resistant K222 allele. They report here the frequencies in 1236 tested animals of the resistance-associated K222 and several other alleles by breed and herd. Eight animals were found to be heterozygous QK222 goats (0.64 per cent genotype frequency, 95 per cent CI 0.28 to 1.27 per cent) but no homozygous KK222 goats were detected. The K222 allele was found in Saanen, Toggenburg and Anglo-Nubian goats. The fact that only a few goats with the K222 allele have been identified does not preclude the possibility to design and implement successful breeding programmes at national level.

Pandemic influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 virus has retained its ability to infect swine whilst developing the ability to transmit effectively between humans, thus making the pig a valuable model for studying disease pathogenesis in both species. Lung lesions in pigs caused by infection with influenza A viruses vary in both their severity and distribution with individual lung lobes exhibiting lesions at different stages of infection pathogenic development and disease resolution. Consequently, investigating interactions between the virus and host and their implications for disease pathogenesis can be complicated. Studies were undertaken to investigate the discrete expression of pro- and anti-inflammatory mediators during lung lesion formation in pigs during infection with influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 (A/Hamburg/05/09) virus. Laser capture microdissection was used to identify and select lung lobules containing lesions at different stages of development. Dissected samples were analysed using quantitative RT-PCR to assess pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokine mRNA transcripts. Differential expression of the immune mediators IL-8, IL-10 and IFN-γ was observed depending upon the lesion stage assessed. Upregulation of IFN-γ, IL-8 and IL-10 mRNA was observed in stage 2 lesions, whereas decreased mRNA expression was observed in stage 3 lesions, with IL-8 actively downregulated when compared with controls in both stage 3 and stage 4 lesions. This study highlighted the value of using laser capture microdissection to isolate specific tissue regions and investigate subtle differences in cytokine mRNA expression during lesion development in pigs infected with influenza A(H1N1)pdm09.

El kéfir de agua (KA) es una bebida fermentada medianamente ácida elaborada con soluciones azucaradas y fermentada por un consorcio de microorganismos, principalmente bacterias ácido lácticas (BAL) y levaduras (LEV), embebidas en un polisacárido llamado gránulo de KA. La presencia de hongos y sus toxinas es un problema de la producción de alimentos, como Aspergillus ochraceus y sus micotoxinas especialmente en café y vino. Entre algunas alternativas que se han evaluado para su inhibición se incluyen las bacterias ácido lácticas y productos fermentados en general. El objetivo principal de esta investigación fue evaluar la capacidad del KA en inhibir o retrasar el crecimiento de A. ochraceus. Se emplearon 8 sobrenadantes libres de células (SLC) obtenidos de diferentes fermentaciones de panela con gránulos de KA y con diferentes concentraciones de ácidos orgánicos (láctico y acético). Se hicieron fermentaciones con gránulos de KA en solución de panela por periodos de 32,5 h, a 25, 30 y 37 °C. Se determinaron la cinética de acidificación; el incremento de biomasa y se hizo el recuento de los grupos de microorganismos que componen el gránulo. A 25 °C se determinó el mayor aumento de biomasa (92%). La temperatura de fermentación afectó el recuento de los microorganismos que conforman el gránulo, principalmente las BAL, disminuyendo su cantidad a la máxima temperatura de fermentación (37 °C) (1x10ˆ6 UFC ml-1), comparado con la mínima temperatura (25 °C) (6x10ˆ7 UFC ml-1). El fermento que presentó mayor actividad antifúngica fue el SLC5 (pH: 3,2; temperatura de fermentación: 30 °C). El poder inhibitorio se atribuyó a los ácidos orgánicos producidos durante la fermentación, aunque no se puede descartar que hayan actuado otras sustancias no cuantificadas. Se pudo comprobar que el KA puede fermentar y aumentar su biomasa en un sustrato como el agua de panela y que sus SLC tienen la capacidad de reducir el crecimiento de A. ochraceus.


Water kéfir (WK) is a moderately sour fermented beverage elaborated in sugar-containing solutions through fermentation by a microorganism consortium, principally lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and yeasts, embedded in a matrix of polysaccharide so-called WK grains. The presence of fungi and their toxins it is a problem for the food industry, such as Aspergillus ochraceus and their mycotoxin production especially in coffee and wine. Some alternatives that have been evaluated for their inhibition include lactic acid bacteria and generally fermented products. The main objective was to evaluate the capacity of WK to ferment a Colombian beverage made with Panela and to assess capability of this product to retard the germination of a common toxigenic fungi like Aspergillus ochraceus. 8 cell-free supernatants (CFS) were obtained from separate fermentations and with different organic acids (OA) concentrations (e. g., lactic and acetic). Different fermentations were conducted with WK in Panela broth during 32.5 h periods at 25, 30, and 37°C. We determined the kinetics of acidification of WK along with the corresponding increment in biomass and conducted a quantitation of microorganisms groups that composed the grain. The greatest biomass increase occurred at 25 °C (92%); but the fermentation temperature affected the composition of microorganisms conforming the grain, with the quantity of LAB decreasing at the highest fermentation temperatures (37 °C) (1x10ˆ6cfu ml-1), compared with the minimum temperature (25 °C) (6x10ˆ7 cfu ml-1). The CFS5 (pH 3.2; fermentation temperature 30 °C) exhibited the greatest antifungal activity. We attribute the inhibitory power of these ferments to the OA produced during fermentation, although we cannot discard the possibility of the action of other substances not specifically quantified. We concluded that WK can grow and fermentate Panela broth and that its CFS can exert an antifungal effect against A. ochraceus.

BACKGROUND: Ischemia-reperfusion injury-induced primary graft dysfunction after lung transplantation is a major cause of early morbidity and mortality. CASE REPORT: We report an unusual case of primary graft dysfunction grade III following uneventful off-pump bilateral sequential lung transplantation caused by paradoxical left ventricular failure due to systolic anterior motion of the mitral valve-induced left ventricular outflow tract obstruction. Cardiac failure was precipitated by profound dehydration and administration of high doses of vasopressin and norepinephrine. Immediate connection to extracorporeal membrane oxygenation treated the graft failure-associated respiratory-pulmonary hypoxia and reversed the cardiogenic shock syndrome. CONCLUSIONS: Hypovolemia together with a hyperdynamic state resulting from catecholamine administration may result in the development of dynamic left ventricular outflow tract obstruction even if baseline cardiac evaluation is unremarkable. Early detection and intensive efforts to reverse the underlying conditions including cessation of catecholamine therapy and correction of hypovolemia are essential.

Previous studies have shown the association between the polymorphisms serine (S) or aspartic acid (D) at codon 146 of the PRNP gene and resistance to scrapie. All goats aged >12 months (a total of 1075 animals) from four herds with the highest prevalence of scrapie in the country were culled and tested, of which 234 (21·7%) were positive by either the rapid test or immunohistochemistry (IHC) for any of the tissues tested. The odds of scrapie infection occurring in NN146 goats was 101 [95% credible interval (CrI) 19-2938] times higher than for non-NN146 or unknown genotypes. IHC applied to lymphoreticular tissue produced the highest sensitivity (94%, 95% CrI 90-97). The presence of putatively resistant non-NN146 alleles in the Cypriot goat population, severely affected by scrapie, provides a potential tool to reduce/eradicate scrapie provided that coordinated nationwide breeding programmes are implemented and maintained over time.

INTRODUCTION: Migraine may present with cranial autonomic symptoms typical of trigeminal-autonomic cephalalgias, thus posing diagnostic difficulties. AIM. To report a series of patients with prominent eyelid oedema associated with migraine. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Ten patients attending the headache offices in three hospitals (nine women, one man; age: 26-53 years-old) with recurrent eyelid oedema as a migraine accompaniment. RESULTS: According to the diagnostic criteria of the International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD-III, beta version), eight patients had migraine without aura, one had migraine with aura, and one had chronic migraine. Eyelid oedema appeared during the most severe headache attacks, and had longer duration than the pain. Pharmacological or systemic causes of the oedema were ruled out in all cases. Other associated autonomic symptoms were conjunctival injection (n = 3), lacrimation (n = 2) and rhinorrhoea (n = 1). Both the pain and the oedema improved with symptomatic and preventive therapies for migraine. CONCLUSIONS: Eyelid oedema may occasionally be a migraine accompaniment. It appears in some patients during their most severe migraine attacks, and may improve with the acute and preventive treatment for migraine.


TITLE: Migraña con edema palpebral prolongado: serie de 10 casos.Introduccion. La migraña puede cursar con sintomas autonomicos craneales propios de las cefaleas trigeminoautonomicas, lo que plantea dificultades en el diagnostico. Objetivo. Describir una serie de diez pacientes con edema palpebral asociado a la migraña. Pacientes y metodos. Diez pacientes atendidos en la consulta de cefaleas de tres hospitales (nueve mujeres, un varon; edad: 26-53 años), con edema palpebral recurrente asociado a la migraña. Resultados. Segun los criterios diagnosticos de la Clasificacion Internacional de las Cefaleas (ICHD-III, version beta), ocho pacientes presentaban migraña sin aura, una tenia migraña con aura y otra, migraña cronica. El edema palpebral aparecia durante las crisis de migraña mas intensas, y tenia mayor duracion que la cefalea. Se descartaron causas farmacologicas o sistemicas del edema en todos los casos. Otros sintomas autonomicos asociados fueron la inyeccion conjuntival (n = 3), el lagrimeo (n = 2) y la rinorrea (n = 1). Tanto el dolor como el edema asociado respondieron a los tratamientos sintomaticos y preventivos de la migraña. Conclusiones. El edema palpebral es un posible acompañante de la migraña. Aparece en algunos pacientes con los episodios de mayor intensidad, y responde al tratamiento sintomatico y preventivo de la migraña.
